Keep Austin Weird (and Welcoming): The Queer Gamer's Guide to Austin's Best Tabletop Spaces
Share
Austin has always been the weird kid in Texas. The one city in the state where progressive politics, live music, and an honest-to-god bat colony coexist with Southern hospitality and breakfast taco devotion. It also happens to be the number two board game city in America according to BestPlaces. With a 5.9 percent LGBT population, one of the highest in the South, and a civic identity literally built on the phrase "Keep Austin Weird," this city was never going to have a boring tabletop scene. But here is the part that matters. Austin's queer gaming community did not sit around waiting for someone to hand them a welcoming space. They showed up. They built networks. They turned up at game nights until the venues had no choice but to meet them where they were. What emerged is a scene that is community-built, fiercely inclusive, and absolutely worth your dice bag. These are the tables that earned it.
Welcome to Safe Tables. QueerCraft's ongoing series on LGBTQ-friendly gaming spaces across the country. We care because a good table is everything. And a safe table? That is where the best games happen.

Forty years of keeping Austin weird, one dice roll at a time. Dragon's Lair has been this city's landmark for comics, tabletop RPGs, and Magic: The Gathering since before most queer gamers were born. And they have spent every one of those years proving that gaming belongs to everyone. Their Code of Conduct explicitly names sexual orientation and gender identity. Not vague "be nice" language. Actual words. And they have had it since 1986. In Texas. Let that sink in. The shop cultivates a diverse staff by design, building what they call an empathic and relatable atmosphere. But the real magic is on the calendar. Every Thursday from 7 to 10pm, Dragon's Lair hosts Queer Magic the Gathering Night. Free entry. Beginner-friendly. Promo cards included. They also run Queer MTG Draft events on Sundays and Mondays, also free, also welcoming to players who have never held a planeswalker before. Table reservations are free up to ten days in advance. The queer community is already there. The gaming tables are waiting. Come roll.

Imagine a D&D-inspired coffee tavern in South Austin where the spells are espresso shots, the alchemy bar is very real, and every other Thursday is Queer Magic Night for LGBTQ+ gamers. That is Merfolk's. Part craft coffee destination, part gathering place for Austin's queer gaming underground. Founded by Justin Monroe as a fantasy-themed creative space centered on storytelling and community, Merfolk's has organically become one of the city's most beloved queer-affirming venues. Do512 lists them under Austin LGBTQ+ events. The biweekly Queer Magic Night has built a dedicated following. They also host Queer Quails, a book and game discussion series for LGBTQ+ readers. The vibe is cozy-mystical. The coffee is genuinely excellent. And the community is exactly who you want to spend a Thursday evening with. Check @merfolkcoffee on Instagram for the current events calendar. South Congress has absolutely delivered.
The Secret Lantern Books & Games

Twenty minutes north of downtown Austin in Cedar Park, The Secret Lantern Books & Games is the kind of place that makes you believe in third spaces again. Afro-Latina woman-owned and opened in October 2025, this indie bookstore-slash-game-shop lives in a former bank building. The vault is now a board game room. Yes, really. Owner Dianna spent two decades in the video game industry before building this space, and the intentionality shows. The calendar explicitly centers community with LGBTQ+ Youth Gatherings, Queereoke Open Mic Nights, one-shot TTRPG evenings, cosplay workshops, and author visits. Their shelves feature smutty fantasy picks and diverse stories by design. The tagline is "where misfits make their magic and find their next adventure," and they have absolutely earned it. So yes, it is technically in Cedar Park. Worth every one of those twenty minutes. Some tables are worth the drive.
Vigilante Gastropub & Games

Purple branding, 160-plus board games, craft beer on tap, and D&D drag shows that reviewers describe as amazing. Vigilante Gastropub & Games does not just tolerate queer culture. It performs it. This Near East Austin gastropub is listed in Austin LGBTQ Music & Nightlife directories. Reviewers specifically compliment inclusive bathrooms, which tells you everything about how carefully they have thought about who walks through the door. The menu is gastropub-serious. The atmosphere is what happens when gaming bar culture decides it has nothing to prove and everything to celebrate. They host regular Indie RPG Nights alongside a packed events calendar, and private gaming rooms are available for reservations. Book ahead. Those fill up. If you have been waiting for a table that feels like the queer gaming spaces you always imagined game bars could be, this is it.
Wonko's Toys and Games

If you have ever walked into a game store and spent three minutes bracing yourself before engaging, Wonko's will feel like exhaling. Their mission statement welcomes anyone of any gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, age, neurotypicality, and disability. That is not boilerplate tucked in a footer. It is the operating principle, reinforced by an in-store Code of Conduct with a literal zero tolerance policy for discrimination and gatekeeping. In a hobby that has historically been hostile to anyone outside a very specific demographic, Wonko's has chosen a different path and committed to it in writing. Explicitly. Their selection is stellar. Board games, RPGs, Magic, miniatures. They host open gaming events. And the store culture backs up every word they have put on paper. Northwest Austin. Worth the drive. They even have a text line at 844-305-9366 for community outreach. Low barrier. High warmth.
Emerald Tavern Games & Cafe

Austin's original board game cafe has been bringing people together over tabletop games and pub fare since 2013, and the queer gaming community has made it one of their homes. Emerald Tavern does not brand itself explicitly as a queer venue. It does not need to. The community has voted with their feet. LGBTQ+ groups specifically organize game nights here. The g3 Games nonprofit has used it as a venue. Reddit event organizers explicitly label meetups at Emerald Tavern as LGBTQ+ Friendly. That is community endorsement, and it counts. English Tudor aesthetic, 300-plus games free with food or drink purchase, full bar with 32 draft beers, and a scratch kitchen with British pub fare. The gaming tables are serious. D&D nights, Commander evenings, open play for all levels. The staff is welcoming. And the space is exactly what cozy and inclusive looks like when it is not just marketing copy. If your crew includes queer gamers and all you want is a good table and a pint, Emerald Tavern delivers.
